a love note, a ladder (make that many ladders), time with friends and some Marginal Arts

Close up of an encaustic piece I played with last Saturday.

Feeling quiet and thinking that I may have used up my daily allotment of words on a fiction project this morning. The post I had planned will rely instead on images and links.

A love note to my husband, Kelly. I've been making more of a conscious effort these days to leave love trails behind as I go about my day.

Another piece on the table. Love working on the wee wood blocks.

From a dear, dear friend. I placed it on the chain with the special fiddle and bow. I've been wearing it this week, feeling inspired, both by her friendship (she is a remarkable soul) and the words you see there. And my husband thinks the saying is fitting, not the queen part, but the hissy fit part. I would have to agree.

There's Tiffany on her front porch! I am smiling just revisiting the day with this image. I don't get to see her often, you see, so time spent in her company is extra-precious. She's been by my side through an awful lot, yes, she has, and I just love her for it. We were playing with sticks from her (awesome) yard, working on spirit ladders, inspired by these. I haven't finished mine yet but will share soon. (Tif, you plan on sharing yours too, right?) It was a marvelous day!

Another marvelous day was yesterday, the kickoff day of the Marginal Arts Festival. I was able to make it to a few events. Sweet new friend (though I feel like I have known her for years and years, fellow artist and blogger, Soul Collage facilitator, Lisa Plummer, was good enough to keep me company at the Drive By Printing event at Hollins and to stroll through the musuem with me. She's good, good company too and I should mention a good sport, since plans were changing yesterday left and right and she rolled right with them, smiling the whole time. I am blessed with beautiful-hearted women friends.

Here's Lisa, going round. The directions were to hold the handle on the wheel, go around once, contemplatively looking at the art. Second time, looking inward at the wheel. Here's what Lisa was looking at:

Amazing art by Helen Frederick

Outside the museum were the nice Drive by Printing guys. Their work was super neat. Got to visit briefly with other friends there (also missed a few which was a bummer) before heading out to pick up my car, sick in the shop all week. Abigail (the car) is better now with brand new alternator, battery and various belts. She's driving like a dream. Which was good as there was more art goodness last night at Roanoke's downtown art museum, the Taubman, and local galleries. Olivia and I met up with some friends and made it to the Taubman and one gallery, Gallery 108, before deciding we were famished. Alejandro's Mexican Grill fixed that. Fish tacos=Yum. I didn't take my camera last night silly, silly me!) and Olivia let me borrow hers, but....I didn't have it on the right setting because all shots but 5ish were blurry. I may try to get back to the Taubman at some point to get better images of the ladder art. Aren't they just completely wonderful!

More goodness, last night. Talented local artist and friend, Katherine Devine, had art there at the museum. Love her and her art!

A graphic novel by author/artist Audrey Niffenegger. It was a story that will stick with me forever. It took a sad turn though near the end, maybe too sad for little readers, so dear friend and writer, Angela, and I decided to lead the girls to happier sights. There was definitely a lot to look at there at the museum last night. Oh, I wished I'd photographed the costumes. There was a guy/girl there dressed as a zombie and Olivia did NOT like that at all. It was very realistic. One time I looked at her, she was craning her neck around, acting skittish and not like herself at all. I said, "what's wrong, honey?" and she said, "I've got to watch my back tonight." Love my cautious sweetie.and lastly, a shot from this morning. (please pretend that you do not see the blue painter's tape that has been on my door FOREVER, ok?) It's not everyday a girl wears a red tutu to school.

ps- If you are local, don't forget to check out the Marginal Arts calendar. Lots of good stuff happening this weekend!!!!

Oh wow. There's so much to love here that I didn't even know where to start. What an awesome week you've had, girl! I'm so glad I could be part of it; thanks much for including me. Am hoping to work on my ladder more this weekend, so will definitely post something about it (though my camera is broken, so not sure how I'll get pix. :() But thank you so much for all this kindness and beautiful images and that amazing day. I felt like I was living in this e.e. cummings poem:

i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any--lifted from the no
of all nothing--human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

While all the shots and stories of the art were wonderful, the one that I love the most is the red tutu! Jules always likes to wear odd things like this to school. When she was little I finally decided that whatever she wanted to wear was fine ... it wasn't a battle I was going to have every day until she moved out. The fact that you are down with the red tutu makes you completely awesome in my eyes!

omgosh and I forgot to tell you how much I love that piece you did on Saturday. There's so much to comment on here that I panicked. LOL But I had to come back and tell you that.

Tricia, you are rich with gratitude and creativity. Your encaustic of the angel girls and the Owl are both amazing! I also adore Olivia in her red tutu...your photographic talents are exceptional---the composition, light and subject are sublime.

I can't wait to share the ballet songs Olivia so generously compiled for our ballerina granddaughter coming to visit 3/13. We are very grateful, Olivia. You are a kind and beautiful girl!

I loved getting a Tricia hug tonight and spotting that wonderous Tiffany necklace--it is gorgeous as is Tiffany's poem! Biennial is a beautiful exhibit of local art--makes all of us proud to see the talent in our midst. Does anyone else sense of leap of creativity among us lately? Maybe this is the goodness and light pouring in, in spite of other worldly troubles and strangeness?
Thanks for these images! Love you heaps and heaps.

dreama, olivia says another dance mix is in the works as soon as i get itunes going again on the HP and now...now, my ipod isn't working...i have spent too much time fiddling with it this morning... i will pass the sweet words on to her when she is home from dance.
it was WONDERFUL seeing you and gina last night. you both are tremendous blessings and inspire me just by being in my life...and i truly mean that. the biennial exhibit was wonderful -lots of creative goodness going on. i think that being around kind, creative souls does something really magical for all involved, some sort of recharging or energy generating....
heaps and heaps of love returned!
can't wait to hear about the time with all the grandchildren.
