Following the Burning of the North Field

Found poems are one of my favorite things to do in the art room; they are what I do in between stories and while waiting for paint to dry. I am forever amazed at the way the words find their places and I discover a story. It may look boring to some but when I look at my bowl of words and old book pages, I can do nothing but wonder at what is next to be discovered. If you haven't tried it yet, I encourage you to do so. And if you do, please send me a link, I'd love to see.

The images on this journal page are two I pulled from my "picture tub" - a catch all place for things I've cut from old books and magazines.

Following the Burning of the North Field

A great wind arose.

It picked up,

cast up,

the corpses four feet high,

all the way to the sea.

Mistress Annetje* cried.

With heat-seared fingers

she clenched her fists

and pounded on her heart

in misery

for she was the gentle queen

of the field and forest,

a lover of the purple thistle flower,

and the slender white iris,

and now of the unadorned quiet

in the meadow

laid bare.

* pronounced Annettie

Wow, great poem. I love your ideas. I have quite the stash of collage materials, but your organized thinking about it is a different way for me to consider. Found you through Artsee...xox Corrime

I really love your found poems. I thought they might be fun to try with my second graders. I'll let you know how they go.
